It's TWINS!!!
At that time it was just the three of us and Tru was 4 years old. We were all together at the doctor's office that day in May of 2010. The little sonogram room was dim and there was a small flat screen television mounted on the wall. I remember reclining back on the exam table watching intently to catch the first glimpse of what our "baby" would look like at 13 weeks, listening for that first sound of a heart beat. As the picture slowly came into view I first noticed what looked like to shadowy bubbles and then two tiny bodies. I was frozen in amazement. Looking over at my husband I waited for the realization to hit him. His realization came quick and with lots of excitement! "Is that TWINS!?" he asked the lady doing the sonogram looking at her then me. "Yes, sir." she confirmed smiling at my husband who could barely contain himself. She printed our first sonogram pictures and sat us back in the waiting room to wait on the doctor. Sitting there waves of emotions flooded my mind. I was excited, shocked, amazed, and just overwhelmed with the whole idea! We spent the remainder of our pregnancy planning, praying, and dreaming about what it would be like to raise our twins.
Pregnant with Twins!
For me my twin pregnancy was amazing. I didn't have morning sickness. I did feel a little nauseous at the very beginning, but once I started using Jackie Mize's book Supernatural Childbirth, I didn't deal with it again. If you don't know about this book you should check it out for yourself. It is a practical guide on how to put your faith in God to have a healthy pregnancy. She uses Scripture and her own circumstances that she went through to encourage and inspire women to reach for the best pregnancy possible! Everything I'm about to tell you that I experienced with our twin pregnancy is because of God's goodness through Jackie Mize and her ministry. So no morning sickness, no aversion to food or smells, all of our tests on us (the twins & I) came back with out problems, and even my doctor was amazed at how well our twin pregnancy was going. I did use a few other books, because even though I had been pregnant before, I had never been pregnant with twins! Check that post out here! When it came time to deliver we did deliver by csection...I had deliverd Tru that way because of complications during his delivery. I wish I had known about her book before we had Tru! So, we prayed and believed that Csection was what was best for us with the twins. This too went off with out any problems. Our boys were born healthy and perfect early on a Thursday morning at 36 1/2 weeks. Our first little guy out was 5lbs & 9 ounces and our second little guy was 6lbs and 1 ounce. They were able to stay in the room with us and we went home the Saturday following their birth.
Our First 3 Months
Once we were home the real fun began. The first 3 months are a little bit of a blur. My life for those first 3 months were literally feed, change, sleep. Then repeat. I would say try to have help that first month. We did and it was greatly appreciated, but after they left we spent those months working on a good schedule, adjusting our life as a family of three to a family of five, and trying to find sleep somewhere in the midst of it all. I breastfed for the first month, but baby B wasn't getting back up to his birthweight as quickly as he needed to and after a couple visits with their pediatrician & a couple of visits with a lactation consultant I let myself get in fear over the whole ordeal. It's totally possible to breastfeed multiples so I say go for it just be sure to educate yourself before hand, have a great support group, and try not to stress about it. For me I was so sleep deprived and stressed about his weight that we ended up bottle feeding the boys. They were & still are very healthy little boys and like my husband says we would change a things, because look at how great it's all turned out.
So when did I sleep? Very rarely. Our little ones were up every hour and half to two hours the first month. Nights were not my favorite times! We got through it and had a system going so that I could catch up on my sleep. Since I was able to be home with them full time I took the full night shift during the week, but on Friday and Saturday nights my awesome husband would take the late night shifts. We had it down to a fine science. I would have the boys bathed and in their jammies by 8. We would feed & change them one more time and lay them down. Then I would be in bed as fast as I could and he would take the middle night feedings and changings, so I could sleep. He kept them in the living room when he did his shift, so that I could sleep soundly. He made a night out of it and he would spend extra time with our oldest watching movies with him. I vividly remember the first night we did this. I slept from 9 till like 3 am! Oh my goodness talk about the sweetest sleep ever! I felt so refreshed the next day. He was a life saver and my greatest support!!! Still is!
I have sweet memories of the twins being little. There's something so amazing about holding two little babies in your arms. Rocking them, feeding them, and loving on them. For me, it was hard work but so precious! We had fun too! It was fun to watch them grow and interact with each other and us. It still is!
When I first found out we were having them I wondered how we would do it all. Then when they came along we just did it. It wasn't always easy, but we love them and as any parent knows the love we have for our children is the greatest fuel!
Parenting twins is an amazing adventure full of so many different seasons, so enjoy each one because they will pass by quickly even when it doesn't feel like they are. Cut yourself some slack and relax because you CAN do it!
